Working In Iceland is normally a challenge, battling the elements and shooting on spec with a radically changing landscape and a dynamic set of creatives was, of course, a challenge in itself. However, the use of the fabulous Fuji Camera GFX50S was a welcome gesture by Fuji UK who gave me complete access to the full kit to complete my location shoot for the International brand Lambertz of Germany.

POST – PRODUCING AN IMAGE

Rurik Gislason a truly professional subject battled with the rain and the sleet and even though he is Icelandic he still found it challenging. My extreme challenge was to not only pose the subject with what was really a very loose and uninspiring composition, but I had to somehow connect him with the location, the weather and then the action of kicking the ball.

The only way I was able to do this was to use quite a strong profoto light source with no light control or diffusion, doing this would help the light cut through the rain and sleet and freeze the subject but also underexpose the landscape. This was going to create a theatrical composition and make the image something it really could never be without controlling these elements and when the client suggested this look I was not convinced and had to really dig deep to make it happen. In the video, you can see me battling but all the time I had in mind my final workflow which would complete the images back at the studio in the UK

VIDEO BEHIND THE SCENES – FUJI GFX50S & RURIK GISLASON

In these pictures featured and the video, you can see me and the team working at close quarters in driving rain and sleet with the International footballer and Icelandic national Rurik Gislason. As he played in Germany also it made sense for the client that as a celebrity it would work for their brand being Icelandic and playing in a national German team.

In the video below you can see some behind the scenes but also a brief overview of my work process and of course the final images for the prestigious Lambertz Calendar. Two images were in the final selection with the kicking of the ball being the final one featured in the Fine Art Calendar.

FUJI CAMERA FILES IN RAW POST-PRODUCTION IMAGE NEAR COMPLETION

Lambertz Calendar image of Rurik Gislason on location Iceland. This image is now partway through the process and you can see the enhanced skies, the ball has been added and the levels have been adjusted on the greens to pick them out from the monochromatic rocks. You can see the rain in the image but the Fujicamer GFX50S just captured it all without any problem with sharpness and blurring.

This picture is right out of the camera in Fuji raw mode, it really shows how the overexposing of the subject throws the background underexposed and creates that theatrical look which was for the Icelandic Calendar.
